On the 11th of June, Twitter announced that they are going to start verifying accounts of high profile users such as well-known Artists, Athletes, Actors, Public Officials and Public Agencies on a quest to try and stop impersonation and establish authenticity.
This is all well and good but now lets talk about the problems which arise.
First of all not everyone can get a authenticity badge. It’s only for the high-profile users who have to deal with the problem of impersonation which is kind of sad ![]()
Another thing is that I’ve been on the TechCrunch website and found that one of their writers, MG Siegler is complaining that Twitter is verifying accounts without actually verifying them. It might sound dumb but it’s true. Basically, what his argument is that Michael Arrington, the founder of TechCrunch had his account verified before he actually submitted it for verification but on the other hand MG Siegler has more followers than him and his account hadn’t been verified…? The TechCrunch Twitter account hadn’t been verified either and that has over 700,000 followers.
“I guess it’s only those select “celebrities” or high profile people that are getting verified,” he said in the blog posting.
Here’s Twitter’s explanation of who gets verified accounts right now:
“We’re starting with well-known accounts that have had problems with impersonation or identity confusion. (For example, well-known artists, athletes, actors, public officials, and public agencies). We may verify more accounts in the future, but because of the cost and time required, we’re only testing this feature with a small set of folks for the time being. As the test progresses we may be able to expand this test to more accounts over the next several months.”
Submitting the form to get verified is actually a pretty easy process, it’s getting accepted as a verified account is what’s hard. They are only doing it to some accounts.
Overall I think it’s a great idea and will be helpful in the large Twitter community however problems and disappointments are inevitable but what can you do? Drop a comment below to tell me what you think ![]()
